I've eaten "bomb pops" since I was a kid, but yesterday was the first time I was served one as a garnish in a cocktail. And it was a visual delight.

The Bomb, which is currently on the drink menu at Fuel on 5th, is a mix of Champagne and Aperol (an Italian aperitif) served with the ever-popular red, white and blue Bomb Pop ice. It sells for $8.

The drink – even without the frozen treat – is refreshing and light, almost like a hard seltzer with a little bite that comes from Aperol's bitterness. Aperol is usually served before a meal to stimulate an appetite, but this could certainly be ordered as a dessert drink.

There are three ways to drink The Bomb: let the Popsicle melt into the cocktail, dunk the popsicle into the drink and eat it cookies-and-milk style or do a little of both. I recommend the little-of-both option.

In any case, The Bomb is creative and fun and really hit the spot on the first "hot" day of the year.
