Leon’s isn’t just a Milwaukee favorite frozen custard destination for the summer. Open year-round, the classic drive-in was popping on a Sunday night in October, with customers scattered everywhere.
The menu offers a variety of custard treats, from cones to shakes to floats and customizable sundaes. I picked a chocolate custard sundae, with butterscotch sauce and, as an add-in, pecans. The sundae comes with four cherries on top.
The chocolate custard complimented the butterscotch topping, and the pecans added a lovely crunch. Leon’s offers peanuts and Spanish peanuts in addition for pecans, all at an extra cost.
If you’re not a fan of butterscotch, you can try caramel or chocolate sauce – or any of the other toppings, including marshmallow, malt powder, fresh strawberries, raspberries, pineapples and hot fudge.
Plus, the flavor of frozen custard – besides chocolate – can be vanilla, butter pecan or the flavor of the day. And the cherries added something extra sweet on top of the sundae – of course, otherwise they wouldn’t be the true cherry on top.
The custard shop is open 11 a.m. to midnight daily. Make a quick stop at Leon’s, enjoy some frozen custard even as the temperatures head toward freezing. One bite, and you'll be convinced the weather's always right for a sundae.
