MKE Sports & Entertainment announced Tuesday that the Milwaukee Wave named a new coaching staff by bringing in former players Giuliano Oliviero as head coach and Nick Vorberg as an assistant.
"This is a very thrilling and proud day for my family and I, and I look forward to the challenge of coaching a team as talented as the Milwaukee Wave," Oliviero said in a statement.
"I have been fortunate enough to be part of three Wave championship teams, and my immediate goal as head coach is bringing another title to this storied franchise. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Zimmerman, Sue Black and the rest of the Wave organization for showing confidence in me as we help lead the Wave into the MASL and a new era of indoor soccer in Milwaukee."
New team owner Zimmerman added: "Aside from their great knowledge and experience of the game, Giuliano and Nick love the Wave and our fans with great passion. As a previous player and assistant coach for the wave Giuliano has earned a unique and elevated level of respect from our players. I found this trait to be extremely compelling when making our decision. Giuls and Nick give us our best chance to win now and we expect that they will lead this club to its full potential."
Major Arena Soccer League play is slated to begin late October 2014 with 24-teams from across the United States and Mexico. A 2014-15 schedule will be announced in September along with a playoff format.
Milwaukee Wave home games will still be played at U.S. Cellular Arena.
