Milwaukee is a foodie town and is a foodie site. All you have to do is go to our home page to figure that out. We even have one of our city's most esteemed chefs as a featured blogger!

With all the fun surrounding food in our culture, on television, and the glorification of all things gastronomic, we sometimes lose sight of those who don't have enough to eat.

Perhaps the only image of starvation you can conjure up is a tearful Sally Struthers in some far away country.

Newsflash, people: Hunger is an American issue.

You like local food? Well, this is a local problem.

The statistics are staggering.

"Seventeen million children in the U.S. went to bed hungry last night! One in four kids can't count on getting enough nutritious food to grow and thrive, and now with summer upon us it means that school is out and they don't even get school meals." (Huffington Post June 14, 2011)

What can you do?

You can have your red velvet truffle infused cake and tweet it, too.

Join Share Our Strength's Dine Out For No Kid Hungry, a national event that brings together thousands of restaurants and millions of consumers to help make sure no child in America grows up hungry. From Sept. 18-24, 2011, participating restaurants will raise funds through a variety of ways to support No Kid Hungry, Share Our Strength's national campaign to end childhood hunger in America by 2015.

Do one or all of the steps below to get involved:

  1.  Go to The TweatOut instruction page and make sure you start your list of local area restaurants that you enjoy.
  2.  Make a $25 donation here. That's what you'd spend on one night of a good grill out. Skip the grill out for leftovers and you can feed a child three meals a day for over a month.
  3. Take the pledge and join over 42,500 people who are helping to fight childhood hunger.
  4. Add the Twibbon to your avatar. Show your support.
  5. Watch and share this video.

Thanks to Jonathan Brewer (@houseofbrew on Twitter) for bringing our attention to this great cause and the five-step action plan.
