We're now in the final stretch of the movie marathon that is the Milwaukee Film Festival, and while you may be getting exhausted, the lineup certainly isn't yet. There are still plenty of great movies to check out – and here are three in particular for today!
"The Club"
Did you see the slyly movie "No" when it came to Milwaukee back in 2013? If your answer is the same as the name of the film in question, then you should fix that ... and then watch Chilean director Pablo Larrain's follow-up "The Club" (perhaps not necessarily in that order). His latest follows a pack of priests living quietly in exile when a newcomer rattles their comfortable mental peace. The story appears to start in grim territory and only stay there, but judging by the trailer, the results look rather thrilling and tense, and Larrain has nimbly worked with tough topics before (say, "No" and political revolution). I can't imagine "The Club" is any different.
"The Club" shows today at 1:30 p.m. at the Downer Theatre, as well as Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Times Cinema.
"Court"
One of the best movies of the year thus far was "Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem," a modest courtroom drama from Israel. Could a fellow foreign courtroom drama – say, "Court" from India, about a traveling singer whose politically-minded songs land him in the middle of a legal battle – join it as one of the best of 2015? Judging from the buzz and early reviews from other festivals around the world, the answer could be yes.
"Court" shows today at 4 p.m. at the Fox-Bay Cinema Grill, as well as Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m. at the Oriental Theatre.
"Sex(Ed): The Movie"
Controversial priests and courtroom politics aren't exactly light and easy topics, so for the final pick, let's move to something a bit safer: sex education! That's the focus of "Sex(Ed): The Movie," a documentary going through the decades of sexual education to see what they actually taught, what's changing, and what those uncomfortably goofy videos can teach us about American society. Sounds like good, clean, wholesome fun for the whole family, so be sure to snag tickets. I'm sure they will be going hot.
"Sex(Ed): The Movie" screens today at 6:45 p.m. at the Oriental Theatre, as well as Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 9:45 p.m. at the Fox-Bay Cinema Grill.
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
