When Goldmann’s Department Store, 930 W. Mitchell St., closed last fall, it shut the book on an 111-year-old establishment that reached iconic status in Milwaukee.

Now, former co-owner Jerry Lewis, 79, plans to reopen a similar version of the store in a nearby location, 710 W. Mitchell St., later this year.

The new store, called Mitchell Street Menswear, will occupy the storefront in the Kunzelmann-Esser Lofts Building, renovated by Gorman & Company in 2002.

The store will feature urban-appeal menswear, a shoe department, a hat department and a candy counter similar to the infamous one inside Goldmann’s.

Mitchell Street Menswear will open in September 2008.

"I really just got bored being retired," said Lewis.
