Listen, I'm tired of me starting all of these Netflix new arrival info-dumps with Chicken Little-esque cautionary yells about the future of streaming. So let's try something different for this month's announcement: a Chicken Little-esque cautionary yell about the future of streaming ... but this time with numbers!

If you remove the slate of Originals from the newly announced Netflix arrivals list for August, the streaming service is losing more movies and TV shows (46 in total) than adding them (34). Now, sure, if you add all the Originals back in, the Big Red Streaming Monolith is adding a lot of new content this upcoming month – including a second second of "Mindhunter," another round of "GLOW" and a new "Dark Crystal" series. But after those, how many of these Originals do you watch, much less have you even heard of?

The future of Netflix is looking more and more like exclusively Netflix – and when you're looking at your ever-increasing spending on streaming, is there enough exclusive content here to earn your money against Amazon's massive library of theatrical and original releases; Disney's impending lineup of current blockbusters, starry series and past classics (now with Fox's back catalogue too); and Warner Bros. and Universal's vast collections, not to mention whatever the heck Apple is planning for its service? Is Netflix alone enough to make it a must in a crowding streaming world?

With questions like that, no wonder Netflix lost subscribers in the U.S. for the first time and missed its global projections.

There are some diamonds amongst the slim theatrical release pickings for August, including the "Rocky" series, "Jackie Brown," "Gangs of New York" and "Groundhog Day." Allow me to also toss out a recommendation for "The Bank Job," a heist caper starring Jason Statham that's much more clever than the phrase "heist caper starring Jason Statham" would suggest. You'll also be able to watch "Jupiter Ascending," a movie in which Channing Tatum plays a dog-man who fires a gun that barks while zipping around on moon boots. So there's that.

But the days of Netflix being your one-stop streaming shop, of being Blockbuster at your fingertips, are now officially numbered. Soon, it'll just be another TV channel. Prepare for that – and also look at the new arrivals coming to the streaming service in August.

Matt Mueller Culture Editor

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.

When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
