Merry Christmas and happy holidays from Netflix! And to celebrate the season, the Big Red Streaming Monolith will gift you one of the biggest movies of all time, one of the biggest cult classics of all time and almost assuredly one of the most Oscar-nominated films of the year. You're too kind, Netflix! (Now bring back "Paddington.")

The streaming service will add hits like "The Big Lebowski," "Hellboy," "Shaun of the Dead" and "District 9" to begin the month before placing "Avengers: Infinity War" under your digital stocking on Christmas Day. And then there's the Netflix Originals, a whole sleigh full of them – including 14 alone on Dec. 7 and 15 more just a week later. Which feels like maybe more than a reasonable human being can handle, but hey, 'tis the season for sitting on the couch killing leftovers and killing time lazily half-watching something, dreading your return to work.

One Netflix Original you should definitely watch, however, with your full attention is "Roma," Alfonso Cuaron's latest mesmerizingly immersive masterpiece and a sure bet for Oscar consideration. Just don't watch it on Netflix. As one who was lucky enough to see this in a theater, this seemingly small but massively life-sized drama following a year with a Mexican housemaid in the '70s will be utterly wasted on your TV screen or sound system – regardless of their quality. With it's massive deep-focus 70mm shots and life chirping and breathing (often literally) outside its frame, to watch "Roma" anywhere other than the big screen will be like only having two-thirds of the experience. It'll still be good, but its point is doomed to be dulled.

Luckily, Netflix – questing for big-time Oscar nominations and potentially a Best Picture win – is making the rare decision to roll the film out into select theaters. And according to The New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis, Milwaukee will be one of the stops.

Which theater? It's hard to say. The Marcus Majestic has all the equipment to show the film as Netflix wants (that's who hosted our press screening), but large theater chains aren't playing ball with the streaming service's non-existent theatrical-to-home release window – and I doubt the Majestic wants to dedicate weeks in one of its larger auditoriums to a black-and-white, foreign-language, star-devoid, meditative memory of a movie that people could watch at home. The Oriental Theatre would be the next bet as it has 70mm projection capabilities, but not the Dolby Atmos sound system that Netflix requires. The Downer then, with its parent company's cozy ties to Netflix? Uncertain. But wherever big screen it ends up on in Milwaukee, see it there – not at home.

As for movies and TV shows you're fine watching from your couch, here's the rest of what's coming in December.

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.

When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
