The coronavirus pandemic has changed our everyday life, but it doesn't need to change who we are. So, in addition to our ongoing coverage of the coronavirus, OnMilwaukee will continue to report on cool, fun, inspiring and strange stories from our city and beyond. Stay safe, stay healthy, stay informed and stay joyful. We're all in this together. #InThisTogetherMKE
If you're like me, you've spent most of this shutdown period mostly binge-watching either horrible news headlines on your phone or the ceiling as you stare off in both existential dread and standard issue day-to-day dread.
But when you summon the strength to get up and try living as much as you can during this social distancing, there's Netflix waiting for you. (Boy, does THAT sentence sound strange coming out of this former Netflix skeptic's mouth.) And thankfully, the Big Red Streaming Monolith's monthly announcement of new arrivals shows that the service should be up to the task of distracting the country for at least the next month.
Surprisingly, the Netflix Originals aren't the star of the show for April. That's not to say that they don't have some exciting new stuff coming down the pipe. After all, there's a new season of "Nailed It," a new Taraji P. Henson/Betty Gilpin number called "Coffee & Kareem" that I desperately need after Gilpin's star-making turn in "The Hunt," a new Chris Hemsworth actioner called "Extraction" and "Tigertail," the much-anticipated feature film debut from "Master of None" co-creator Alan Yang.
It's just the lineup of outside movies and TVs is just THAT startlingly impressive – from the best movie of the last decade ("The Social Network") to the return of the "Matrix" trilogy to classics like "Taxi Driver" and "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" to new gems from seasoned masters ("Hail, Caesar!," "Django Unchained") to stupendous sci-fi ("Minority Report") to kids film favorites ("Despicable Me") and even a beloved TV show coming to Netflix in "Community." These days, normally it's the other way around! Throw in some recent buried gems ("Mud," "The Girl with All the Gifts," "The Killing of a Sacred Deer") and even "Deep Impact" in case you crave additional world-ending vibes in your life for some reason, and you've got a strong month of digitally delivered distractions.
And if none of that works for you, well, there's always more staring at the ceiling and mentally reciting, "F*ck," over and over again.

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
