With the introduction of Disney+ (and, sure, AppleTV+ too ... but also, nah) this month, the streaming wars have officially begun – and Netflix didn't implode yet! Success!

Now, they do find themselves playing from behind for the first time in its existence, as Disney+ and the streaming services following shortly after – Peacock  in April, HBO Max in May – will have decades upon decades of content compared to the Big Red Streaming Monolith's less than ten years. And sure, Netflix is churning out its own content – but most research has shown that's not how most people use the service; they basically view the originals as a bonus to the old comfort food ("The Office," "Friends," etc.) they regularly watch. Without those proven TV shows and movies, will people stick with Netflix for its unknown original content? Not since the announcement of Qwikster has Netflix had more egg on its face and concerns for its future.

This latest additions announcement for the month of December won't alleviate those worries – though there are some decent options in here to distract from Netflix's imminent demise. So, uh, success? Again?

As you'd expect, most of those solid additions are Netflix Originals – starting with the best movie of the year and an early frontrunner for multiple Oscars in a few months, "Marriage Story," starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver as a couple navigating a cross-country divorce. Milwaukee Film Festival-ers got to see this terrific dramedy on the big screen in October, and while there's still a chance it could have a brief return to the big screen (a very slight chance), your best bet for seeing of the cinematic standouts of 2019 will be in your living room – for better or worse.

Speaking of Oscar plays, Netflix will also debut "The Two Popes," a heralded drama starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce as, uh, two popes. And on the complete other side of the world from awards bait is "6 Underground," the latest explosion-athon from Michael Bay. That Michael Bay – whose movies are almost exclusively made to watch on overwhelming giant screens with insanely loud stereo sound – is now moving to streaming is somehow sadder than Scorsese, Baumbach and company doing the same. This is the darkest timeline.

Outside of movies both baiting Oscars and murdering braincells, the Big Read Streaming Monolith will also showcase the second seasons of the stalker soap "You" and the sci-fi reboot "Lost in Space," the debut of the highly anticipated dark fantasy "The Witcher" and a John Mulaney ... children's variety show? Sure, why not. When you're trying to keep pace the Mouse House, you gotta throw anything and anything at the wall, right?

There are a few notable outside additions to the Netflix catalogue – "It Comes At Night," "Secret Life of Pets 2," the Pierce Brosnan Bond movies – but really, that's not what Netflix is for anymore.

Matt Mueller Culture Editor

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.

When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
