Until recently, Milwaukee and Scranton, Penn. had very little overlap. But now we have a vintage and handmade shop in Walker’s Point that’s the sister store to a similar spot in Scranton. (Yeah, yeah there will be more about "The Office." Keep reading.)
In October, On and On Milwaukee opened at 1031 S. 5th St. inside a former auto body shop. The marketplace features 40 local artists and vendors selling art, jewelry, vintage clothing and household items, vinyl records in an area of the shop called “Record Town” and more.
“It’s a little bit of everything,” says co-owner Meegan Possemato.
Until the end of the month, On and On Milwaukee hosts “March Market Meltdown,” a month-long promotional event with 10 local vintage businesses. The concept is simple: obtain a card at any one of the shops; spend $10 at five or more shops; get entered into a drawing for the chance to win one of three $100 gift cards from one of the participating businesses. The drawing will be Sunday, April 6.
Here are the businesses participating in March Market Meltdown:
- On & On Milwaukee
- Antiques on Pierce, 1512 W. Pierce St.
- Bandit MKE, 1224 E. Brady St.
- Clocktower Antiques, 1134 S. 1st St.
- Farm Girl Art & Antiques, 803 S. 5th St.
- Riverview Antique Market, 2045 S. St. Paul Ave.
- Sardines Vintage Collective, 2925 S. Delaware Ave.
- Spectre Vintage, 437 E Stewart St.
- Third Point Of View, 1134 S. 1st St.
- To Hell And Back Vintage, 643 S. 2nd St., Studio 1B
- Walker's Point Antique Center, 1134 S. 1st St. (Second Floor)
Possemato says the partnership acquainted them with numerous vintage vendors in the city. On & On Milwaukee also printed maps with the location of the shops to make shop hopping even easier.
“Everyone has been so supportive and nice,” says Possemato.
Possemato and her husband, Andrew Planey, opened On and On Scranton about 10 years ago. During a visit, Planey’s cousins from Milwaukee, Scott and Maureen Planey, expressed interest in opening a similar marketplace in Brew City.
The idea came to fruition fairly easily. Originally the couples were looking to buy a building, but fell in love with the openness of the 5th Street space.
Possemato and Planey now live between Milwaukee and Scranton. (Yes, THAT Scranton. Here is a mural on the side of their other business, On and On Scranton. These are our people, Milwaukee!)
In the near future, On and On Milwaukee plans to host events both in the shop and the street during Urban Harvest block parties. It will also participate in Gallery Nights.
In recent months, the south end of South Fifth Street has undergone a renaissance. As part of a $7.95 million plan from the Department of City Development (DCD), a new plaza with public art and greenspace is nearing completion on West Washington Street between South 5th and South 6th streets. Plus, Cork wine bar opened earlier this month, joining a thriving corner with Urban Harvest Brewing Co., Emerald Eye Tattoo Shop, Arts @ Large art gallery and education space and Cream City Photo & Video.
“We’re so excited to meet so many people in Milwaukee building community through vintage,” says Possemato.
