Pear vodka is like a gift from the liquor gods. A few companies produce it, and Absolut's Pears brand is reasonably priced and extremely fragrant. On its own, pear vodka is basically undrinkable, but when mixed in a cocktail, it's potent, refreshing and deliciously unique. Absolut's ad campaign is pretty accurate, too: the stuff is tempting.
Absolut offers up a bunch of pear vodka recipes on its Web site, but I prefer a simple vodka press. Not too sweet, not too strong, a press lets the natural flavor breathe without getting drowned out by a ton of extra flavors. A traditional vodka press calls for equal parts Sprite and club soda, though I prefer my drinks a little less sweet. Mix and match and see for yourself:
Ingredients:
1.5 oz. Absolut Pears vodka
1 part club soda
1 part Sprite
Instructions:
Pour into a highball glass and garnish with a slice of lime, or ideally, pear.
