Salas Burgers
807 W. Mitchell St., (414) 384-3965
Salas Burgers opened just over a year ago on Mitchell Street and since then has garnered positive buzz via word-of-mouth and social media.
The restaurant and bar has a no-frills decor, with tables, old school video games and two pool tables in the large front section and a small bar in the back.
As the name suggests, the burgers are the bulk of the menu, with eight specific types to choose from or the option to build your own.
During a recent visit, we had the Rancho Burger, featuring muenster cheese and avocado atop a thick, very juicy meat patty, and the Supreme Clientele, with bacon, two kinds of cheese, grilled onions, mushrooms, peppers and avocado.
The buns were particularly fresh and, although we prefer our burgers medium rare, they are served perfectly medium. Overall, the burgers are large, messy and flavorful. The fries that come with the sandwiches, however, are average.
The menu also includes appetizers, sandwiches, a fish fry, wings and salads. The bar offers soda, more than a dozen beers with an emphasis on Mexican beers and some limited drinks, including Bloody Marys.
Type of food: Burger-centric, with American and Mexican fare.
Prices: Affordable. Burgers range from $6 to $9.50.
Vegetarian friendly? There is a veggie burger available in the build-your-own section of the menu.
Hours: Open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Parking: Metered parking on Mitchell Street.
Vibe/dress: Very casual. Carry-out and delivery is also available.
Hits: The burgers are very hearty and flavorful. Definitely on par with Oscar’s or Mazo’s. Our server was also attentive and accommodating.
Misses: The wings were over-fried and a little dry. We would not order these again, but would try the spicy tater tots or jalapeño cheese balls as an appetizer next time.
Insider tip: After our visit, we read on Yelp that there’s a "secret menu" featuring more unique Mexican food. Next time, we will certainly inquire about this.
