Welcome to a weekly segment called "Social Circle." It's truly a group effort between readers, social networkers and the OnMilwaukee.com editors. Every Monday, we ask a question via Facebook and Twitter and then post the responses from our Facebook "likers" and Twitter followers in this column. Well-known Milwaukee movers and shakers will contribute, too.
It's Peeps season again and, like the black jelly bean, these Eastertime offerings are a controversial confectionery. It seems folks either love 'em or hate 'em, so this week, OnMilwaukee.com asked the Social Circle to weigh in with their opinions on Peeps.
Also, some people take Peeps to inedible new levels by creating art pieces from the bunny-and-chick-shaped sugary treats. Anyone interested in contributing to Peep Show can click here for more information about one in Bay View that's happening on Sunday, April 1 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Tonic Tavern, 2335 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.
There's another Peep Show at the Racine Art Museum.
Now, back to the Social Circle:
Monica Freitag: "Yep, sugary, gooey goodness. But get turned off when they are in the shape of snowmen, pumpkins and turkeys. They are meant to live in Easter baskets!"
Anthony Garrison: "The kids love Peeps' s'mores. Pink ones taste the best for some unknown reason."
Paul Hoffman: "Yuk."
Holly Jefferson: "Disgusting."
Melinda L. Johnson: "I do love 'em, they simply remind me of childhood, they're all sugary and colorful, make an enchanting s'more and are wonderful dipped in a cappuccino. Mmmm ... Peep biscotti."
Wendy Kogler: "Only when the outside layer is crunchy."
Heather Leszczewicz: "Yum. Yes. They are junk food goodness saved for holidays. Also love making them blow up in the microwave. Little meringues."
Claudine Lienau: "Love them! Especially after they have been sitting open a few days and are chewy."
Hannah Medrow: "I like two per year. One fresh out of the pack and one a few days later, stale and chewy."
Mary O'Connell: "Eeeeew, yuck."
Kate O'Keefe: "I can honestly say I've never tasted one, despite participating in the PEEP Show almost every year for the past 3 or 4 years! Maybe I can be convinced to try one this year!"
Sandy Oliver: "Nope...maybe if I roasted them on an open fire they would be better. Add some chocolate. Perhaps a graham cracker."
Jessica Z. Schafer: "I don't like to eat them, but they make fun art."
Dan Schmidt: "I know someone that takes Peeps and makes them into famous peeps."
Connie Terrill: "The only time I buy them is for me and my dad's annual contest of who can blow them up bigger in the microwave at Easter dinner."
David White: "I made a video once with my film mentor Chris Hume wherein a couple 'o' dozen Peeps met their end whilst soaked with lighter fluid. We recited passages from Dante's Inferno and had our friend Andrea play violin in keys banned by Vatican 2. Let's have a Peeps Roast in honor of Semiramis and the Spring Equinox."
Autumn Whitlow: "I think they are gross. Because they are gross."
