Today, the Locust Street Festival in Riverwest kicks off it’s 32nd year. It’s known for its Beer Run, great music and eclectic attendees, many of who bring their dogs. However, for the past couple of years, festival organizers encouraged festival goers to leave their dogs at home. Squabbles between pooches -- and the belief that some dogs in attendance weren’t safe around children -- triggered this request.

Do yuo think it's fair for a festival – any festival, not just Locust Street – to ban dogs from the event? Should pet caregivers have the right to take their dog to a free, open-to-the-public street festival, or are stringent rules regarding animals in everyone's best interest?

Finally, should certain breeds -- like pit bulls -- have special restrictions?

Dogs should be able to attend. As long as a dog is on a leach and is reasonably trained, they should be allowed to attend street festivals. This is a situation where a few bad apples might spoil it for responsible caregivers and that isn’t fair. Dogs are people, too!

Dogs should be banned from street festivals. You really can’t stop irresponsible dog owners from bringing their pets to festivals, so the only option is to ban them altogether. It’s too bad, because some people view dogs as their family members, and would like to enjoy the festivities with their pets, but it’s just too dangerous to allow dogs.
