The Milwaukee Brewers have placed second baseman Rickie Weeks on the 15-day disabled list due to tendonitis in his right wrist.
Weeks struggled with soreness for much of the season, and was hitting just .243 with five home runs and 16 runs batted in. He had the same writst surgically repaired after sustaining an injury last season.
Manager Ned Yost said that there was no structural damage to the wrist, but that Weeks would need some time off to let the soreness dissipate. Weeks will see Dr. Don Sheridan, who performed the operation, tomorrow for further evaluation.
Yost said after the Brewers 4-3 victory over Florida Thursday night -- the second straight game Weeks sat out -- that the situation got to a point where the disabled list was the only viable option.
“At this point in the season it was crazy to have him keep battling,” Yost said. “We’ll give him 15 days to let it settle down, get that inflammation out of there, and get it back strong again.”
To take Weeks’ spot on the roster, the Brewers recalled right-handed pitcher Jose Capellan from AAA Nashville. Capellan drew unwanted attention earlier in the season after being the last player cut from the 25-man roster at the end of Spring Training. He later got into hot water with management after he demanded a trade and left the Sounds for two days without permission.
In 17 appearances including three starts, Capellan posted a 3-2 record with one save and a 3.86 ERA. Opposing hitters are batting just .223 against him.
He started the season on a tear, but recently struggled. The Sounds moved Capellan into the starting rotation and he pitched six innings in his last appearance. Yost expects Capellan to move into the long-relief role that was held by Elmar Dessens and more recently, Carlos Villanueva.
“He’ll slide into that role,” Yost said. “We’ll get an opportunity to use Carlos more in the sixth or seventh inning as opposed to making him our long guy.”
Villanueva doesn't anticipate any animosity towards Capellan when he arrives in the Milwaukee clubhouse on Friday.
"He's a very emotional guy," Villanueva said. "Sometimes you make decisions that are easy to regret. "He understands that, and he's kept his mouth shut like he should and now he's back. He'll do a good job."
Weeks' move to the DL was retroactive to Wednesday.
