Season's eatings! The weather may be getting colder, but Dining Month on OnMilwaukee is just cooking up, dishing out your winning picks in this year's Best of Dining poll. Dining Month is brought to you by Fein Brothers, your premier food service equipment and supply dealer in Wisconsin since 1929. Congratulations to all of the winners, and happy eating for all those who voted! See all the winners for the month so far here.
Purple Door Ice Cream
Since OnMilwaukee debuted this category in 2012, three local favorites have each had two-year runs as Milwaukee's best food product. For the first two years, Usinger's sausages took the title (and, as you can see below, still has our staff's hearts); in 2014 and 2015, Palermo's pizza held the claim; in 2016, Purple Door ice cream became the first sweet to beat out the savories. And in 2017, the tasty, frosty scoop shop repeated as winner.
Purple Door Ice Cream is smooth and sweet, with a variety of flavors both comfortingly classic and deliciously unique (gotta have that Brandy Old Fashioned). It's a deserving back-to-back winner; but if our trend continues, is its two-year reign now over?
Runners up:
3. Usinger's sausages
2. El Rey chips
4. Clock Shadow Creamery cheese curds
5. Rishi tea
OnMilwaukee editors' pick: Usinger's sausages
Lori Fredrich's pick: Usinger's sausages
When I cast a vote for Usinger’s, I’m paying homage to a Milwaukee product that has seen our city through both thick and thin times. It’s a product from a family-owned company that has remained true to its heritage, stood by the ingredients in its 100-year-old recipes and continued to deliver on a promise to create authentic German sausages and European style meats.
