Maxie's

When it comes to dishing out the city's best Southern comfort food, why not pick the place that once had it in its name?

Indeed, Maxie's has gotten mighty comfortable at the top of this poll category, winning every year since 2010. This year is no different, as Maxie's, with its delicious mix of barbecue, seafood and other Southern favorites, claimed its title yet again.

The biggest takeaway from this year's category, however? Wisconsin may be as north as you can get, but there's no shortage of crave-worthy Southern comfort to be found, with some great newcomers to the scene landing in the top five, including The Tandem and Daddy's Soul Food and Grille.

For its pick, the OnMilwaukee staff selected Ashley's, which has survived a rough stretch, with both of its locations suffering fire damage. But the Center Street location is back up and running and serving some of the best barbecue in town.

Runners up:
2. The Tandem
3. Ashley's
4. Daddy's Soul Food and Grille
5. Mr. Perkins'

OnMilwaukee editors' pick: Ashley's

Lori Fredrich's pick: The Tandem
Not only is there Midwestern soul food at The Tandem, but there is truly a soul. It’s evidenced by not only the friendly neighborhood faces in the restaurant, but by the way chef and owner Caitlin Cullen has trained her kitchen staff to produce keenly crisp Memphis style fried chicken, deliciously braised greens and countless other. Not only has the restaurant brought new life to the old Wally Schmidt Tavern, it’s given countless people a reason to travel a bit farther on Fond du Lac Avenue.
