Snap your fingers in the air and yell "Work" with attitude, Milwaukee theater fans; the smash Broadway historical hip-hop hit "Hamilton" will come to town, according to Marcus Center president and CEO Paul F. Mathews.
Mathews dropped the news during the Milwaukee Business Journal's Business of Entertainment event late Tuesday afternoon at The Pfister Hotel. Green Bay Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy was the featured speaker, but it was the panel section of the event – featuring Mathews, Rolando Rodriguez of Marcus Theatres, Don Smiley of Summerfest, Kathleen O'Leary of the Wisconsin State Fair and Gary Witt of the Pabst/Riverside/Turner Hall – and Mathews' "Hamilton" confirmation to the crowd and reporters afterward that stole the show.
Paul Mathews just confirmed that @HamiltonMusical is coming to MKE and the @MarcusCenter! The big question is when... #BOE17 @MKEBizJournal — Tami Scully Garrison (@ScullyGarrison) May 16, 2017
So when can we expect Hamilton, Burr, the Shuyler Sisters and America's favorite fighting Frenchman? *prepares to sprint to the Marcus Center credit card first*
Marcus Center CEO Paul Mathews reconfirms Hamilton is coming to MKE. "I can't tell you when. That's classified" #BusinessofEntertainment — Erik Bilstad (@erikbilstadWTMJ) May 16, 2017
Oh. *sits down, slides credit card dejectedly back into wallet*
Indeed, there are no dates, and with that obviously no tickets yet on sale, for "Hamilton" here in Milwaukee. After all, the show is still just beginning the nationwide rollout from its groundbreaking original Broadway run, adding shows in Chicago and San Francisco last fall and upcoming tour dates in Los Angeles, Denver, Seattle, Atlanta, Cleveland and more scattered across early next year. But no Milwaukee on the list just yet – and considering the Marcus Center already announced its 2017-18 schedule, we'll probably still have to wait well over a year at least.
So all we still really know is that the giant Broadway smash that was guaranteed to come to town at some point is now DEFINITELY guaranteed to come to town at some point.
But I guess some news – no matter how vague – is better than no news.
In the meantime, keep replaying the soundtrack over and over to the point of memorization (who are we kidding; you got the whole thing by heart a year ago), watch what few clips can be found on the internet, save your shekels for what will be the hottest – and most certainly heftiest – ticket in town and stay tuned for the official dates. Because when the 11-time Tony-winner makes its way to Milwaukee, you'll want to be in the room where it happens.
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
