Three years ago, the artist-led working group Wallpapered City created Black Cat Alley, a collection of murals literally in an alley on the East Side, and later the Bay View Street Canvas project. Now, the group has shifted its focus to the East Tosa area near North Avenue and 68th and 69th Streets where a new corridor of outdoor murals will be installed this summer.

Currently, The City of Wauwatosa is seeking submissions from artists for this new summer project that will include up to six murals paid for by Wauwatosa’s Tourism Commission.

Local and national artists are invited to apply. Artists have six weeks to prepare their proposals which are due June 1. Chosen artists will be announced June 17. Artists may download a copy of the Call for Artists here.

"We are open to having a mix of both local and national talent," said Ald. Joel Tilleson, who has been supportive of the mural corridor from the beginning.

Walls that will boast murals include the east-facing wall of Cranky Al’s donut shop, the west-facing wall of the Nobleman barber shop, the west-facing rear wall of Tosa Yoga, the east-facing wall of BelAir Cantina, an upper area of the west side of the historic Rosebud Cinema, and perhaps the entirety of the Voline service Station, a classic gas station located across the street from Cranky Al’s.

"This project is going to be great for our community," said Tilleson.
