"Irresistible," the latest work of political comedy from "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart, made a splash today when it announced its official release date: a high-profile summer debut on May 29. However, what may have caught Wisconsinites' eyes was not when the Steve Carell-led movie's set to hit theaters, but where the movie itself is set: Wisconsin.

The film, according to a press release from Universal Pictures, "is a comedy about what happens when a small Wisconsin town becomes the main attraction of our political circus. After the Democrats' top strategist Gary (Carell) sees a video of a retired Marine Colonel (Chris Cooper) standing up for the rights of his town’s undocumented workers, Gary believes he has found the key to winning back the Heartland. However, when the Republicans counter him by sending in his brilliant nemesis Faith (Rose Byrne), what started out as a local race quickly becomes an out-of-control and hilarious fight for the soul of America."

Written and directed by Stewart, as well as produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment, the movie also stars Mackenzie Davis ("The Turning"), Natasha Lyonne (Netflix's "Russian Doll") and Topher Grace – which might solve the mystery of why the "That '70s Show" actor was at the Wisconsin State Fair this past summer.

OR DOES IT!?

This is where I splash cold water on your face: The odds of much actual Wisconsin showing up in "Irresistible" are low. Perhaps there will be some B-roll establishing shots of some farmland or some landmarks, but according to casting alerts and the Marietta Daily Journal, the role of Wisconsin in the political comedy will be played mostly by the state of Georgia – which should come as no surprise considering the Peach State offers tax credits to film productions and Wisconsin does not. Or at least it hasn't since 2013. (Prediction: As much as he loves the city and has invested in it, writer-director John Ridley's upcoming Milwaukee-set Showtime series will do something similar.)

So if you're wondering why a small Midwestern town looks oddly Southern this summer, that's why – though at least Stewart came out to the state back in 2018 when he was working on the script for scouting and research purposes. Hopefully that'll result in some Sconnie authenticity amongst the Georgia backdrops.

As for how the rest of the movie will turn out, well, I guess we'll find out when "Irresistible" comes out in May against Disney's "Artemis Fowl." And for more Wisconsin movies (whether they actually filmed here or not), here's a list.

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.

When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
