The quarantine continues on – and thankfully Netflix's pipeline of streaming shows and movies does as well, as the Big Red Streaming Monolith announced this week its lineup of new arrivals for May 2020.
When it comes to Netflix Originals, while there's not a lot of big recognizable titles, there's plenty of big recognizable stars heading to your living room. Steve Carell will return to the world of office dysfunction ... but this time in SPAAAACE with the debut of his new sitcom "Space Force" on May 29. Jerry Seinfeld and "Nanette" breakout star Hannah Gadsby will both have new stand-up specials, Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae's once-theatrical comedy "The Lovebirds" will instead make its premiere at home in the middle of the month, and Oscar winner Damien Chazelle ("Whiplash," "La La Land") will make his move to the small screen with the jazz drama "The Eddy."
Also, "Glee" and "American Horror Story" mastermind Ryan Murphy will debut a new mini-series: "Hollywood," about a bunch of ambitious outsiders challenging the show business status quo. Gosh, I wonder what drew Netflix to this project! Certainly no ego-boosting projecting going on there, no sir!
Even Netflix's outside options are pretty impressive, featuring Oscar-nominated gems ("United 93," "District 9") action-packed gems ("Den of Thieves," "Public Enemies"), classic gems ("Back to the Future," "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory") and even "Uncut Gems," last year's 150-minute profane Adam Sandler gambling panic attack. (That's all a good thing, I swear!)
Perhaps the most notable arrival next month, however, isn't what's coming to Netflix but what's coming against it: HBO Max, Warner Bros.' new streaming contender, which will make its debut on May 27. And while its slate of originals is limited to start, its collection of old favorites is to be reckoned with, featuring all of HBO, Warner Bros. movies, the beloved animated movies of Studio Ghibli, classic films ("The Shining," "2001," "Wizard of Oz," "Casablanca") and some of television's biggest hits ("Friends," "The Big Bang Theory," "Doctor Who," "The West Wing," "The Fresh Prince," "South Park"). It's maybe the strongest competition Netflix has received – and things won't get easier with Universal's Peacock (still time to change the name!) coming shortly after in June.
The cable-ization of streaming is just about complete – and now we'll see how Netflix survives with a full fleet of big-budget rivals up against it. (And also Quibi *snickers*) All I know is right now, considering there's nowhere else to go and nothing else to watch, the battle royale is coming at the right time for viewers – if not their wallets or attention spans. And you thought it was hard to keep track of this stuff before ...

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
