After spending the past year nagging Netflix about its declining selection and predicting its imminent demise, I almost feel bad for the Big Red Streaming Monolith.
The end of days, or at least very challenging days, for the breakthrough streaming service are now in sight with Disney+ and Warner Bros.' HBO Max poaching away movies and gearing up for their debuts, with Universal, Apple and a Paramount newly reunited with CBS not far behind. And the newly announced list of new arrivals for the month of September does not help assuage any fears, featuring more additions along the bizarrely random likes of "Spookley the Square Pumpkin" and "Loo Loo Kids: Johny & Friends Musical Adventures" and fewer noteworthy hits like "300" or "Lord of the Rings" (but only two of the three films).
As has been the case for the past several months now, the commendable new releases are almost entirely in the Originals category – next month featuring a new series from Ryan Murphy called "The Politician" and a new spy drama series from Sacha Baron Cohen. Yes, a drama starring Borat. There's also a "Lost"-esque riff called "The I-Land" (because that worked so well for "Surface," "Manifest," "Invasion," "Jericho" and a dozen others), a Bill Gates documentary and a "Between Two Ferns" movie – but really, even amongst these new Netflix Original options, there's not a lot of signature names. There doesn't appear to be a "Stranger Things" or "GLOW" or "Mindhunter" in the bunch.
It's lot utterly dire amongst the outside releases as well, as the streaming service is adding hits like "300," "Superbad," "Eat Pray Love," "American Psycho" and the two aforementioned "Lord of the Rings" adventures. But look at this lineup, and see how many movies get you excited about the next 30 days of Netflix. I imagine a lot of shrugs reading what follows below – and the Big Red Streaming Monolith has to be concerned those shrugs are going to continue as other streaming platforms show up with larger libraries, and in Disney+'s case impressive bundles, to offer.
And so here we are: The giant killer is slowly becoming the streaming David against the studio Goliaths. Don't feel too bad, though; they cancelled "One Day at a Time." HYOU MONSTERS!
