People dream of seeing legendary rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Queen, AC/DC and more. Unfortunately, some are no longer with us, some broke up, some don't tour and some break the bank to buy tickets.
Thanks to groups like The Classic Rock Show, however, you can still see these legends and their awesome rock anthems come to life on stage. And lucky for headbangers here in America, for the first time, the British cover band is invading the U.S. with their live-wire live jukebox act, complete with a stop at The Pabst Theater on Sunday, Feb. 26.
After being a part of Brit Floyd, a similar tribute show dedicated to Pink Floyd, guitarist James Cole wanted to expand his performance, paying tribute to eve more essential musicians from the classic rock era. After plenty of practices, research and going through the critical details of beloved songs, The Classic Rock Show came together and toured throughout the United Kingdom. Now, they hope to bring the same energy and excitement to rock lovers here in the U.S.
Two different bands will switch off throughout the night, performing the "A to Z of Rock," giving you an opportunity to hear everything from AC/DC to ZZ Top – and everything in between.
"We play the songs you expect to hear at a Classic Rock Show, but then a few songs that you wouldn't expect," Cole said.
Before the show Sunday night, we chatted more with Cole about growing up in love with rock 'n' roll, playing in a cover band and figuring out which classics to bring out on stage.
OnMilwaukee: What made you want to be a part of a cover band?
James Cole: Generically it's a cover band, but we are much more than that. I use the analogy of we're like an orchestra who would play Mozart. We aren't covering it; we are just performing this music as well as we can.
How do your narrow down your set list and decide which songs The Classic Rock Show performs?
It's a big case of democracy, so I asked all of the members of the band what they would like the set list to be. Then we all sit down and come up with all the different choices they would like to do and then I come up with a set that's feasible for an audience.
What is usually the biggest crowd favorite from the set list?
Ooh. Well, Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" is a crowd favorite. It's such an iconic song.
Did you grow up listening to this music?
I grew up listening to all kinds of music, everything from Jackson Browne to Bob Dylan. So, yeah, I grew up, luckily, in a family who listened to a lot of different types of music. So this is a dream job from a show perspective, because it's everything you want to play and grew up with. It's the music that's the reason you picked up your guitar in the first place.
