On Wednesday, March 14, thousands of students and teachers will leave their classrooms at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes to honor the 17 students killed in the Florida massacre last month, as well as to raise awareness for school safety.
In support of National Walk Out Day, The Waxwing, 1800 E. North Ave., is providing a community open house from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The free event will feature live music, local inspirational speakers and open workshops.
All workshops are free and open to the public on a first come, first serve basis. Fifteen percent of anything purchased in the store during the event will be donated to REDgen.
"As a local business owner, I didn't go into this shop because I love working retail. I was looking for community. The community that I've found has inspired me, helped support my family and shown up time and time again when we've faced challenges. So when something happens in our world and our community is hurting, it's my responsibility to show up for them," says Waxwing owner, Steph Davies. "This event is open to everyone, all ages. We hope people bring their good vibes and leave inspired, energized and hopeful."
