Admirals goaltender Pekka Rinne will miss training camp and the start of the regular season after undergoing surgery to repair a dislocated left shoulder. Rinne injured his shoulder earlier in the off-season when he was assaulted by unknown assailants outside a bar in his native Finland.
"It's disappointing, but that's what the NHL is all about -- good and bad things happen,'' Predators general manager David Poile told the Nashville Tennessean. "The good news is that he should be ready around the start of the new year, so we hope he'll be able to play half a season in good form."
Poile told the newspaper that the club hoped rest and rehabilitation would cure Rinne's shoulder. Now that the surgery has been performed, Rinne could miss up to four months.
"He probably could have played with it, but there's a good chance it might have popped out during the season. so collectively, we decided it was smarter long-term to go with the surgery.''
Rinne, 23, who is 6 feet 5 inches tall and 207 pounds, had a 30-18-2 record for the Admirals last season and was named to the American Hockey League all-star team.
"We hope that Pekka will have a quick and strong recovery from this unfortunate injury," Admirals president Jon Greenberg said. "We will have a good competition between Karl Goehring and Scott Reid for the top job until Pekka returns."
