When I first visited Fox Den last year, a food-truck-turned-resident-restaurant inside Great Lakes Distillery, 616 W. Virginia Ave., I was immediately smitten with the smashburger.

I ate every last morsel of The Bang! Burger that comes with two, quarter-pound smash patties, American cheese, minced onions, pickles and a signature sauce on a hearty bun. Since then, I've returned for the vegan beet burger called The Beetbox and a chicken smash burger topped with with raita, chutney, curry caramelized onions, shredded cabbage and cilantro named The Bollywood.

Fox Den has numerous "Foxy Bites" to choose as sides, but my hot take is don't snooze on the fries, folks. They easily could be the star of the show. They might actually be fried in heaven and sent down on by an angel with wings powered by Uber Eats.

Fox Den's fries are crispy on the outside, warm and soft on the inside, seasoned with the perfect combo of salt and spice. Best of all, there are so many dipping sauce options on the menu that pair perfectly with both the sandwiches and the fries. Take that, boring ketchup.

So if you're a French fry freak like I am, put Fox Den on your list to try. And while you're there, might as well enjoy a cocktail or two. Winky winks.

Happy National French Fry Day, Milwaukee!

Fox Den is open the same hours as Great Lakes Distillery (but they close a half-hour earlier.) Monday through Thursday from noon to 8:30 p.m., Friday from noon to 11:30 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
