Netflix is hemorrhaging non-originals and its reign at the top of the streaming heap will receive its strongest challenge yet in the form of Disney+ in November (with HBO Max coming hot on their tails next spring).

In fact,  film fans and filmmakers alike took to Twitter this week to decry its proposed playback feature that'll play movies 1.5x faster – in case you want to watch a movie but don't want to have to go through the hassle of, you know, watching the damn movie – and its financial plan consists of piling some more billions of debt onto its billions of debt. To quote one of the many popular TV shows that will almost certainly disappear off the Big Red Streaming Monolith in the upcoming months: Not great, Bob!

But you know what's a great way to distract people from your upcoming struggles and possible impending demise? A new Martin Scorsese crime epic! But seriously, good strategy; it's almost working on me!

Indeed, Scorsese's massive gangster epic "The Irishman" – the crown jewel of Netflix's upcoming Oscar season strategy – will come to the streaming service after a short (and hopefully Milwaukee-bound) theatrical release. The reviews out of the festival circuit were rapturous and it's already pegged for several Academy Award nominations (including several categories in which it's the frontrunner), so Netflix has to be feeling good, at least about that. And it's certainly great news for cinephiles because a new Scorsese movie is never a bad thing, much less one starring Robert De Niro, an on-his-game Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.

Also good news for film fans: the rest of November's lineup, which, like "The Irishman," is doing its damnedest to help distract from everything leaving the service for other, potentially greener, pastures. As is the norm, the increasingly decreasing outside additions are nothing too special. "The Matrix" trilogy will be back (yet again) before it leaves in two months (yet again) along with other excellent entries "District 9," "A Single Man," "Grease," "Step Brothers" and "Rosemary's Baby." (Just in time for Not Halloween Anymore!)

But the Originals, again, save the day. The month will open with the medieval Shakespearean spectacle "The King," starring Timothee Chalamet, Robert Pattinson and both of their fully wild haircuts, followed by more "Queer Eye" and "Great British Baking Show," a comedy special from Seth Meyers, the third season of "The Crown" (starring newly crowned Oscar winner Olivia Colman of "The Favourite" fame), two excellent Milwaukee Film Festival alums in "Atlantics" and  "I Lost My Body" ... and a whole bunch of corny Christmas movies as Netflix puts on its best Hallmark costume. I'm already terrified that I will have to watch "The Knight Before Christmas," the latest streaming Christmas kitsch starring Vanessa Hudgens, for a Hallmark Holiday Hell piece. (And now that I've said that in public, I've almost certainly guaranteed it.) Dammit.

Anyways, here's the rest of the new additions coming to Netflix in November.

Matt Mueller Culture Editor

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.

When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
