Kat Linscott is new to bartending, but she knows what she likes. The 21-year-old former daycare worker is now babysitting bigger kids, so to speak, but she picked Leff’s Lucky Town because it was close to home – and the kind of place she, herself, likes to visit.
We caught up with Linscott to talk about the time she served a customer a shot from the bar mat, as well as what it’s like pouring drinks for the Brewers. "They’re always super-friendly when spotted," she says.
OnMilwaukee.com: How long have you been a bartender?
Kat Linscott: Over two years. I was working at a daycare and looking for a night job. It kind of turned into being my full-time job.
OMC: How does working with children compare to working with drunk adults?
KL: It’s almost the same sometimes. Bartending is more fun, though.
OMC: Why Leff’s?
KL: It’s close to where I live. It’s a popular, local bar.
OMC: The kind of place you’d go to, anyway?
KL: Yeah.
OMC: What’s your signature drink?
KL: I like beer, but Kettle seltzer with a splash of cran.
OMC: How about to make?
KL: Stoli Blueberry and Robinade. It’s super delicious in the summer.
OMC: Your least favorite?
KL: Bloody Mary. After 6 p.m., there should be none.
OMC: What’s the craziest things you’ve seen as a bartender?
KL: I was asked for a shot out of the bar mat.
OMC: Did you pour it?
KL: Oh, I did it. I asked him if he was sure. And no, I didn’t charge him.
OMC: Have you ever broken up a bar fight?
KL: Me, personally? No. I send the bigger guys over. I steer clear.
OMC: Do you drink when you bartend?
KL: Occasionally. It usually makes it easier. If it’s early in the night, it makes for a long night, though.
OMC: Where do you drink when you’re not bartending?
KL: Down the street, and I love Brady Street.
OMC: What do you want to do when you grow up?
KL: I still don’t know.
OMC: Who are better tippers, men or women?
KL: Men, but here, more guys come here than women. The biggest tip I ever received was a $100 tip on a $200 tab. Two couples, older, super nice, and they said it was hard to find good service.
OMC: Have you ever bartended for any celebrities?
KL: Shaun Marcum, actually. He was super nice and racked up a big tab.
OMC: Is it weird that players come to Leff’s and hang out with the fans?
KL: They come in with their friends and are always super friendly when spotted. There are so many fun workers here, and it’s a fun bar to be at.
OMC: What’s your Somersby recipe?
KL: The Somersby Sipper. Two shots of Rehorst vodka, four ounces of Somersby, topped off with Robinade and a splash of cran.
