If whimsical characters with toilet paper rolls for faces and a giant Slinky toy for a body sound like fun, “Mummenschanz: 50 Years” is a must-see.
Since 1972, this Swiss troupe – who refer to themselves as "Musicians of Silence" – has traveled the world with their imaginative, non-verbal show. They will celebrate its half century in existence with a special “50 Years” production.
"Mummenschanz: 50 Years" takes the stage at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts, 3270 Mitchell Park Dr. in Brookfield, on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $64 to $69 and still available for this unique performance that appeals to folks of all ages.
“It’s a visual form of theater,” says company artistic director Floriana Frassetto. “It’s poetic, it’s playful, it’s interactive, it’s emotional.”
Frassetto, who grew up in Italy and now lives in Switzerland, is one of the original three members of the troupe. At 73, she still enacts many of the thought-provoking characters she invented along with a new, trained-in-Italy cast.
In the 1970s, Mummenschanz appeared on "The Muppet Show," "Captain Kangaroo" and "Sesame Street," and it landed on Broadway from 1977-1980. The analog artform remains relevant today with its timeless topics of humor, joy, frustration and melancholy.
"It's a show for anyone – 6 to 106," says Frassetto.
