Skinny snacks, "wicked" wine and more are in store for you in this week's OnMilwaukee.com Recommends.
HobNob Wines' Wicked Red – I'm not sure how things work in your neighborhood, but in ours, everyone hangs out together outside while the kids trick or treat for Halloween. And it's usually cold. There might be some fire pits going, some hot chocolate and at some houses there might be lightly-spiked Jell-O cubes for the adults. We don't offer jiggly shots, but I do like a nice glass of wine to warm the insides while handing out candy to the local youth. HobNob's new Wicked Red – a mix of grenache, syrah, pinot noir and cab – won't likely win any chic awards, but with hints of coffee and spice, it is extremely quaffable. If you like vin brule or any kind of mulled wine, I suspect Wicked Red, which retails for $9.99, would be perfect. – Bobby Tanzilo
Skinny Girl granola bars – When the powers that be at the Skinny Girl company sent me a case of their new on-the-go granola bars, I was skeptical. I was not fond of the name nor the image of, aptly, a very skinny girl on the front of the box. But free food is free food, and so I ate my way through dozens of bars and finally decided that they really are delicious. The flavors are unique, too, and my favorites are dark chocolate multi-grain pretzel and banana oatmeal dark chocolate. To me, they are more of a healthy-ish candy bar than a health food item, but they are low in calories and fat. I guess that's important for anyone striving to be a skinny girl, but remember, we like you just the way you are. – Molly Snyder
"Moonrise Kingdom" on DVD and Blu-ray – If you haven't seen Wes Anderson's latest offbeat masterpiece (or even if you did), you'll want to get your hands on a copy of your own. This quirky tale of a pair of intrepid young lovers and the great lengths they take to escape their equally oddball friends and families is an entertaining must-see. The performances delivered by the kids involved (which I raved about when I reviewed the movie in theaters), coupled with the hilarious antics of the all-star cast of adults, definitely earn "Moonrise Kingdom" a spot in your movie collection. – Renee Lorenz
