A new national commercial for American Express features numerous local bars including Steny's Tavern, SkyBox Sports Bar, Nomad World Pub, The Harp and City Lounge. The 30-second commercial was first spotted last Thursday on TNT during the Bucks vs. Raptors game.
"The producers told me they would email the commercial before it aired, but never did, so I had no idea when it was gonna air," says Ryan Steny, co-owner of Steny's. "So last Thursday I’m bartending for the Bucks game and wing night. I’m making some drinks and a table yells super loud “HOLY SH*T THAT'S STENY'S (on TV)!"
"Everyone in the bar started cheering. It was an amazing experience. It gave me goosebumps," says Steny.
Steny says he was contacted last summer by a casting company to find out if Steny's was interested in being a part of a national commercial. Steny said yes, but didn't think much more about it at the time.
However, Steny continued to receive communications and requests from the casting company and quickly realized the offer was legit and crews from Los Angeles were coming to Milwaukee to film a commercial.
The commercial, called "Through It All," focuses on how local establishments kept communities united during COVID-19. It features exterior and interior shots of Steny's and exterior shots of SkyBox, The Harp and City Lounge – among other bars beyond Milwaukee.
Steny says the producers told him after shooting the commercial that they chose Wisconsin for the location because they were hoping for snow scenes. When they began filming, it was raining, but eventually the rain turned to snow which is visible in the commercial.
